handwritten

A place in space for pen and paper, handwritten publishes things in handwriting as well as things on handwriting. Co-curated with Say Madges in 2015, we built handwritten in part out of annoyance: so much of the dialogue back then, and still now, either flattens the act into a romanticization of the art form, or it hyper-fixates on loss (for example, of teaching cursive in classrooms). We were curious: what would happen if we centered the tool in the environment its allegedly being replaced by? The results: an ever-growing network of ink, collection of shapes, and alphabets, real and imagined. Click below to see some of the published work.

After four years of publishing, we paused handwritten between 2019 and 2023 — as we are hand-writers at heart and needed to pursue our own penmanship and processes — but we are resuming publication and programing in Summer 2024.

Pictures to here feature our events with The Smithsonian at The Sketchbook Project; our Pints & Postages series at rotating breweries, our letter-writing workshops at The Morgan Library, a handwritten gala we hosted at Pen + Brush Gallery, and even an outdoor performance series, Out Loud, which took place at Flatiron Plaza.
